Affected Character

Jigsaw, bottom’s up
Life, character-
This piece,
That piece
Sprawled on
the table.
Meticulous assembly
This piece,
That piece.

(Matthew 23:27-Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of the bones of the dead and everything unclean.)

Planted hope in stone
Name will live on forever
Harmless sand tears down.

(James 4:14- Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.

Psalm 144:4-They are like a breath; their days are like a fleeting shadow.

Both NIV Bible)

Time will never
break your heart,
yet hoarded,
slips through hands.
Thinner than the water,
when self’s focus of plans.

A second that you pause to help
can only take away-
your tunnel,
dim enclosure,
that isolates your days.

(Without the creator’s heart-
that beats-)

The flame of skills and talents,
cold ash in our heart-
or weakly lit on display
as dusty, old wall art.

Light ignites these
in His fullness,
lost in His love alone-
these gifts all shared,
encourage, scared,
hearts of heavy stone.

The treasures given
at a need-
unbelief states
we won’t succeed;
If we give away the
things we have-
with illumined heart
that’s cheerful, glad.

Break that fishing twine of pride
and fear,
with snapping sound
our hearts revere
the kindness of the giver who
with open hand gives to us too.

(Acts 20:35-In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: β€˜It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ ”)

Joy’s vows of betrothal forever,
still on the path of our time-
pounding resistance it found me
of the heart that trusts His time.

Dueling wisdoms darkened my knowledge,
I was yanked from side to side;
with unstable actions, beating heart
depressions cloud to hide.

Call out to your teller of truths,
to show you the straight way-
hand Him your sorrow, anger, fears,
when your heart will pray.

(James 1:5-1:8, NIV-If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do.)

New Covenant

Old promises fall
from hands clinging ivy touch,
silence at betray
and dawn rises to heart change;
sealed brand of bloods devotion.

(Hebrews 10:16, NIV-This is the covenant I will make with them
after that time, says the Lord.
I will put my laws in their hearts,
and I will write them on their minds.”)

Save Me

So far off the shore,
through the passage of time.
Shipwrecked faith is my score,
only driftwood to climb.

Current sucked out
where the billows are deep;
In the heart of this ship,
I had fallen asleep.

Clouds rolling, puff,
are fast approaching,
Trying to kick
is a futile notion.

LORD, don’t let these clouds overtake me,
Don’t release me out,
to unforgiving sea.

Heart placed in your hand, turn as you will-
with your presence,
this body fill.

Word Identity

Never viewed his form,
never her voices’ trill-
No time across from them,
elbows on a cold booth
at Denny’s.
Never heard their prayers,
whispering screams,
Sobs or song.
Still, pin them down-
Word-stone by word-stone-
Digital, print, recording-
the heart states its case.

(Luke 6:45, NIV-A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.)

Dry erase board,
Display exploding, black sharpie
my every garbled thought.

I sought you for
wore the backless garment
that challenged my modesty-
Snapped down
your chemical nourishment
with my scrambled eggs and decaf coffee.

Meal silent, legs crossed,
thoughts cotton-brained
that harmonized
with the rhythmn
Of the square,
ticking wall clock.

God’s Word

Heart’s rehearsal of these scrolls beside,
Seal of His Spirit, keeps this life inside.

Called by that Spirit, heart new flesh by His blood-
Saved from the coming fiery flood.

(“These words I am giving you today are to be in your heart.” Deuteronomy 6:6-Holman Christian Standard Bible)
